From the 1880s to the 1920s, Hailey became a hot spot for silver and gold mining. Croesus Mineworks, located on Croesus Creek just below the Kimmich property’s western border, earned a reputation as one of the top producing gold mines in the area.
As the mines slowly began to play out, sheep production became the mainstay of the economy. Today, Ketchum’s Trailing of the Sheep Festival each fall and its Wagon Days parade over the Labor Day weekend remind us of the area’s colorful past.
As modern-day visitors are quick to discover, Sun Valley’s history is as enchanting as its surroundings. It all started in 1935 when Union Pacific chairman Averell Harriman hired an Austrian noble by the name of Count Felix Schaffgotch to search the West for a suitable spot to build a world-class destination ski resort. The Count traveled for months by sleigh and train until he stumbled onto the sleepy town of Ketchum, Idaho. Awestruck by the area and its abundance of sunny weather, Schaffgotch wired Harriman with his findings. Harriman purchased the 4,200-acre Bass Ranch and soon began development of the Sun Valley Resort.
Sun Valley is a true American original. It’s the home of this country’s first ski school and its first chairlift, crafted from a converted banana boat loader!
Sun Valley has always been a favorite of celebrities of every description: Hemingway, Gable, Lucille Ball, Steve McQueen, and Jackie O, to name only a few, as well as celebrities still in their prime: Bruce Willis, Demi Moore, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jamie Lee Curtis, Steve Miller, Senator John Kerry, Tom Hanks, Peter Cetera, et al.
Although there have been many changes over the years, Sun Valley’s recreational opportunities are second to none, and its appeal remains timeless
